Android “Oreo” is the eighth major version of the Android mobile operating system, released on July 2017. It includes the final system and the latest bug fixes and optimizations.

So what’s better with this new update?

  • 2x the boot speed when powering up
  • Minimizes background activity in apps least used
  • Auto-fills logins (with your permission, of course) so you can get into your apps quickly
  • Allows you to see two apps at once
  • Lets you get to apps by using fewer taps of the screen
  • Notification dots on the app quickly show you what’s new, and can be swiped away to be cleared
  • Utilizes Android Instant Apps, so you can dive into apps from your browser, instead of having to install them
  • Google Play protects your device and data from misbehaving apps, by scanning over 50 billion apps a day
  • Optimises battery life to remain strong and running despite heavy use of the device
  • Has an expressive new set of emoji, with 60 new emoticons and glyphs

What’s more?

  • Accessibility button – allows you to quickly access accessibility features from the navigation bar (like magnification), and functionality within accessibility services (like Select to Speak).
  • Accessibility volume – can optimize the audio experience for users with disabilities.
  • Adaptive icons – so developers can now provide a full-bleed square shaped icon, and OEMs will mask the icon to ensure intra-device consistency.
  • Ambient screen – highlights the incoming notification with a larger font, highlighted app name and immediate access to actions.
  • Background execution limits – for better overall system performance it allows more control over how apps run in the background.
  • Background location limits – limits the frequency of location updates in the background for better overall system health.
  • Deep colour – enables applications to render richer visual content with vibrant colours and subtler gradients. Supports full colour management which allows applications to render images in the format and quality they were intended.
  • Downloadable fonts – which helps reduce their size since applications no longer need to bundle custom fonts.
  • Install unknown apps – users now permit the installation of APKs per-source, so hostile downloader apps can’t operate without permission.
  • Integrated printing support – that is compatible with all Mopria-certified printers (which, incidentally, make up 97% of printers sold worldwide).
  • Linkable files – with APIs that allow you to share files across the Internet via web links.
  • Native C/C++ – means API for high-performance audio.
  • Notification categories – affords a more granular and consistent control over which notifications can appear and how intrusive they are.
  • Notification snoozing – lets users hide notifications for a period of time (this is similar to Inbox snoozing).
  • Pointer capture – allows the app to capture all mouse input.
  • **Project Treble(till date the biggest change to the foundations of Android): a modular architecture that makes it easier and faster for hardware makers to deliver Android updates.
  • TextView auto-sizing – lets developers size their text (expand or contract) automatically based on the size and characteristics of the TextView, thereby making it much easier to optimize the text size on different screens or with dynamic content.
  • Tooltips – provides support for tooltips (small pop-up windows with descriptive text) for views and menu items.
  • Wi-Fi Assistant – auto-connects you to high quality Wi-Fi and secures it with a VPN back to Google.

[The features mentioned above are described according to Android’s communiqué.]

So there you have it! An exhaustive list of things that Android’s 8.0 Oreo brings to the table!
